The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stark warning about the deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that the party’s survival is threatened by the exclusionary and shortsighted decisions of its current leadership. During his monthly media briefing, the former Rivers State governor lamented that the PDP is falling into “booby traps” of its own making, which he had previously cautioned against.
Wike expressed strong dissatisfaction with being systematically sidelined from crucial party deliberations, attributing this marginalization to the fact that he no longer holds a governorship position. He argued that his extensive contributions to the party over the years, combined with his current role as a senior minister, should guarantee him a seat at the table during important stakeholder meetings. In a pointed rhetorical question, he challenged the logic of his exclusion, stating, “I’m FCT Minister for Christ’s sake. Forget about what you think, are you telling me as it is today, because I’m not a governor, you will go and hold PDP meetings, you call them stakeholders and then you exclude me, and then you want to survive.”
Emphasizing that his value to the party should not be defined solely by his present office, Wike insisted that his experience and historical role in building the PDP warranted ongoing inclusion, regardless of his position. He cautioned that the party cannot hope to thrive while consistently ignoring key figures who have been instrumental to its growth and stability. Furthermore, he dismissed the notion that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is to blame for the PDP’s internal struggles, placing responsibility squarely on the party’s own leadership failures and refusal to adopt inclusive and principled decision-making processes.
Wike’s remarks underscore a growing rift within the PDP, highlighting concerns over internal democracy, respect for legacy stakeholders, and strategic direction. His public critique signals that, unless the party addresses these fundamental issues, it may continue to face fragmentation and decline, further undermining its capacity to function as a strong and unified opposition.Read – More
