According to a report by Punch on Friday, October 17, 2025, a civic group known as the Democracy Watch Initiative, DWI, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The group said Atiku’s statement could weaken public trust in the rule of law and send a wrong message about justice and accountability in the country.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, DWI said the former Vice President’s position was inconsistent with his long advocacy for unity and due process.
The group urged Atiku to rethink his comments in the interest of national peace and stability.
According to DWI, Nnamdi Kanu is facing serious charges before the court, including terrorism and treasonable felony.
It said the allegations involve incitement to violence and destruction of both public and private properties.
The group stressed that the ongoing legal process should be allowed to continue without political interference.
The statement explained that calling for Kanu’s unconditional release could send a wrong impression that the law can be ignored for political reasons.
DWI warned that such remarks might encourage disregard for judicial institutions and undermine the efforts of security agencies working to maintain peace in different parts of the country.
”Atiku’s position encourage disregard for legal processes. By calling for Kanu’s unconditional release, there is a risk of undermining the judicial process and the efforts of those working to maintain peace and security,” it said. See, More, Here>>>>
