According to a report by Punch, on Tuesday January 6, 2026, Peter Ameh, National Secretary of the Coalition for United Political Party, has praised APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru for his bold stance in Rivers State politics.
Ameh said FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s involvement in the state was disrupting governance and causing problems for both Rivers and the country.
Ameh argued that Wike had already served his purpose in his former party, which is now largely absorbed into the APC.
He said Wike should formally join the APC and operate under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who, under party rules, is the recognized leader in the state.
He added that the coalition does not take sides between Fubara and Wike.
Ameh described the ongoing rivalry as part of a strategy by President Bola Tinubu, which created two competing groups in Rivers State.
He warned that this could harm the people, who are supposed to benefit from government projects and services.
Ameh stressed that political ambition should not interfere with effective governance.
He said Basiru, as APC National Secretary, has the authority to manage party affairs, while Wike, who is not yet a member of the APC, should avoid influencing party decisions.
The coalition urged all parties to respect the rules, work together, and focus on delivering results to the people of Rivers State, rather than letting personal or political disagreements create division.
“He has been used by the APC in destroying his own party. Now he is no longer needed. I do not cry or shed tears for either Fubara or for Wike. I think it is the game of President Tinubu, which he has played from day one, to make sure that he has two groups of people campaigning for him in River State, and to the detriment of the River State people who are supposed to be beneficiaries of good governance,” he said.
