According to a report by Vanguard on October 11, 2025, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunus Tanko, has issued a strong caution to Nigeria’s political elite, warning that any attempt to shift the presidency back to the North in the 2027 general elections could severely undermine the country’s fragile unity.
Speaking during a media briefing on Saturday, Dr. Tanko emphasized that Nigeria’s delicate balance of power depends on an unwritten but widely accepted principle of rotational leadership between the North and South.
He argued that breaching this understanding, particularly after the North held the presidency for eight years prior to the current administration, would risk inflaming regional tensions and eroding the national consensus that has held since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
“This country is built on mutual understanding and equity,” Tanko stated. “To ignore that by returning power to the North in 2027 would be not only unjust but dangerous to the unity and stability of our democracy.”
Tanko called on political parties across the board to be guided by national interest rather than personal ambition or regional dominance.
According to him, the rotation of power is not just a political convenience but a critical mechanism for preserving harmony among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and regional blocs.
He went further to reaffirm the Obidient Movement’s unwavering support for a southern presidency in 2027, naming former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as the group’s preferred choice.
“Peter Obi represents everything Nigerians are now looking for in leadership integrity, capacity, and a genuine concern for the people,” Tanko said. “We believe he remains the most credible and qualified person to steer this country forward.”
Tanko praised Obi’s track record, pointing to his emphasis on transparency, fiscal discipline, and inclusive development during his time in office.
He argued that the former governor’s approach to governance is a stark departure from the entrenched political culture that has bred mistrust and poor accountability over the years.
As Nigeria gears up for another crucial electoral cycle, Tanko urged citizens to remain vigilant and united in their demand for justice, equity, and responsible leadership. He warned against political manipulations that could fracture the country’s delicate socio-political fabric.
“This is not just about who becomes president,” he said. “It’s about preserving the foundation of our nationhood. Justice and fairness must guide the next transition if we are to move forward as one country.”
He stressed that power should not be concentrated in one region for too long, especially in a nation with Nigeria’s level of ethnic and regional diversity. “If the principle of rotation is jettisoned, it will send the wrong message to the rest of the country that some zones are destined to rule while others are to follow,” Tanko warned.
The Obidient Movement, which emerged as a youth-driven political force during the 2023 elections, has continued to assert its presence in the national conversation.
With millions of Nigerians, especially among the youth and middle class, aligning with its ideals, the movement’s position on key national issues is increasingly seen as reflective of the broader mood of the electorate.
