In a recent interview on Nigeria Info FM, political analyst Majeed Dahiru discussed the international response to religious persecution and the challenges Nigeria faces in addressing escalating violence against vulnerable communities. He emphasized the importance of understanding the global context of religious freedom and the principles guiding foreign interventions.
According to Dahiru, “America designated China a country of concern because of the persecution of Muslims.” He explained that this designation reflects a broader American foreign policy principle: protecting the rights of religious minorities worldwide, regardless of faith. Dahiru argued that just as the U.S. has highlighted China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims, it is equally legitimate for the United States to scrutinize Nigeria for violence targeting Christians. The focus, he said, is not preferential treatment for any religion but a consistent commitment to defending religious freedom globally.
Dahiru stressed that genocide and targeted persecution are defined by identity-based attacks rather than sheer numbers of casualties. While Nigerians of all faiths have suffered from violence, extremist groups like Boko Haram and armed herdsmen frequently target Christians because of their religious identity. He explained that this is why Christian communities raising alarm over such attacks are justified in describing the situation as genocidal.
He also criticized the Nigerian government’s dismissal of genocide allegations as unhelpful and counterproductive. Dahiru argued that sending peace emissaries or holding symbolic meetings is insufficient. True solutions, he said, require decisive security action, enforcement of the law, and accountability for perpetrators, regardless of their religious or ethnic background.
Dahiru concluded that understanding international comparisons—like America’s designation of China—is crucial for Nigeria. It reinforces the point that protecting religious minorities is a global concern, not a domestic or sectarian issue. He called for united national action to address insecurity, protect all citizens, and ensure that extremism does not continue to threaten religious coexistence in the country.
