Adeleke: It Was Announced; They Already Had Clothes To Do The Swearing-in, But It Didn’t Work-Alabi

A former Osun State deputy governor, Benedict Olugbeyega Alabi has alleged that Governor Ademola Adeleke once made a desperate but unsuccessful attempt to defect to the opposition, revealing what he described as behind-the-scenes political maneuvers that ultimately collapsed.

Speaking during an interview on State Affairs with Edmund Obilo, Alabi claimed that the Osun State governor made “frantic efforts” to join his political camp, a move that, according to him, had already been celebrated prematurely by key loyalists of the governor. Alabi, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the alleged defection was widely anticipated within political circles at the time.

“He made that frantic effort to join us, to be part of our team and it was announced by all his lieutenants. They already had clothes to do the swearing-in, but it didn’t work,” Alabi stated during the programme.

According to him, the failed move underscored what he described as the instability and internal contradictions within the current Osun State administration. Alabi argued that the episode reflected a lack of firm ideological grounding, adding that such political calculations were driven more by survival instincts than by principles or service to the people.

The former deputy governor further claimed that the APC remained cautious despite the alleged overtures, insisting that party unity and internal processes could not be compromised by last-minute political realignments. He said the collapse of the purported plan demonstrated that politics in Osun State remains fluid, with alliances constantly shifting behind closed doors.
