In a recent interview with Vanguard News on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Dr Kunle Akindele, the former Osun State PDP Chairman and current Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Public Health offered a spirited defence of the governor’s administration and his prospects for re-election. Dr Akindele questioned the motives of the APC and its leader, former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, suggesting that their recent political manoeuvres are born out of a fear of an inevitable defeat at the polls.
He asserted that the Governor enjoys overwhelming support from civil servants and grassroots citizens, which has prompted the opposition to attempt to block his candidacy through various legal and political distractions.
According to Dr Akindele, intelligence reports suggest that the APC is meddling in the affairs of the Accord Party, where Governor Adeleke has now emerged as the consensus candidate following internal crises within the PDP.
He dismissed recent reports of a parallel primary in the Accord Party as an illegal “kangaroo” process conducted in secrecy without INEC’s oversight. Dr Akindele maintained that the Accord Party remains united and that the governor’s strategic move to the party was a direct response to the will of the people.
He predicted a landslide victory on August 8th of next year, anticipating that the governor’s margin of victory will grow from 20,000 votes in the previous cycle to over 100,000 votes this time around.
A significant portion of the discussion centred on the ongoing friction between the state and the federal government regarding local government allocations. Dr Akindele criticised the withholding of these funds through the office of the Attorney-General, arguing that it unfairly penalises primary school teachers, traditional rulers, and vulnerable citizens at the grassroots.
He commended Governor Adeleke for using state resources to cover these shortfalls and ensure that salaries remain paid despite the federal blockade. He said, “Before he came to power, he promised the Osun people that Osun money would remain in Osun State.”
This commitment, Akindele argued, has been fulfilled by closing financial loopholes and ensuring that state wealth is reinvested locally rather than being syphoned away.
Reflecting on the governor’s three-year tenure, Dr Akindele described the progress as unprecedented, claiming that Adeleke has surpassed the achievements of his predecessors over the last twelve years. He highlighted a massive infrastructure drive that has turned the state into a “construction site”, citing the near-completion of flyovers in Osogbo at Okefia and Lameko, as well as groundbreaking projects in Ife. He also pointed to major road dualisation projects in Ilesa, Iwo, and Ila-Orangun the home of APC leader Bisi Akande as evidence that the governor’s development agenda is non-partisan and inclusive.
In the health and education sectors, the Special Adviser noted that Osun has seen a dramatic rise in national rankings. Under Adeleke’s leadership, the state’s performance in NECO exams jumped from 33rd to 7th nationally. In health, the administration has focused on the vulnerable, enrolling pensioners, people with disabilities, and prison inmates into the state health insurance scheme free of charge.
These efforts have earned the state back-to-back awards for the best health indices in the South-West. Dr Akindele concluded by noting that through agricultural support and small-business empowerment, the Governor has touched every sector of society, making his re-election a matter of popular demand.
