During an interview on AIT on Friday, July 24, 2026, Ezeocha Nzeh, a political analyst, commented on the life sentences handed to three individuals convicted over the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, questioning the difference in sentencing compared with another terrorism-related case.
Speaking during the interview, Nzeh referred to a previous case in which a court in Katsina State sentenced a convicted terrorist arms courier to death. He argued that the differing punishments had raised questions about how the judiciary assesses the severity of terrorism-related offenses.
According to him, “We don’t know where they’re placing these terrorists. You remember that a High Court in Katsina State sentenced a terrorist arms courier by the name of Auwal to death for moving arms to terrorists—not killing—but at least for aiding and providing this thing for terrorists, supplying them arms.”
“He earned a death sentence, but in the last two weeks, we have also seen the judiciary taking a different position. One now wonders about the gravity, the level of how the judiciary looks at an arms courier and somebody that has killed, that has beheaded, that has kept people in captivity for 56 days.”
Nzeh questioned the apparent disparity in sentencing, arguing that the punishment imposed in the Oriire kidnapping case appeared less severe than that given to the convicted arms courier.
