In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his latest foreign trip, which comes less than a week after the president returned from an earlier journey abroad.
”The presidency anywhere is supposed to be a serious job. It becomes worse than a waste when it is converted into a #TravelAndTourism bureau,” he wrote.
In his post, Odinkalu expressed concern about the frequency of the president’s travels at a time when Nigeria is facing serious economic and social challenges, he said the presidency is meant to be a demanding responsibility that requires steady attention to domestic issues, not continuous movement from one country to another.
According to him, Nigerians are struggling with rising food prices, unemployment, and growing insecurity, he believes these problems need urgent leadership presence at home and questioned the value of repeated overseas visits when many citizens feel abandoned and unheard.
The former National Human Rights Commission chairman warned that excessive foreign trips send the wrong message to the public, he argued that leadership should be visible within the country, especially during periods of hardship.
He added that governance should focus on solving local problems rather than projecting activity through constant travel.
