Daiboikiabo Warmate, a public affairs analyst and former ally of Nyesom Wike, says the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State has changed public opinion in a big way. According to him, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has gained strong support from ordinary people across the state, even more than Wike.
Speaking on Trust TV, Warmate explained that he used to defend Wike in the early days of the crisis. At that time, he felt Fubara had not given enough time before reacting. However, his view changed as more details became public, especially after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory openly spoke about the agreement and conditions that caused the disagreement.
As people listened to those details, many began to ask simple questions. They wondered if those issues were serious enough to justify the level of control being demanded over a sitting governor. For Warmate, that moment marked a turning point. He said people started to feel sympathy for Fubara because it appeared he was being overcontrolled.
Warmate pointed out that past governors in Rivers State were not controlled in such a manner. Even Wike himself, when he was governor, did not allow anyone, including the president, to control him that way. He argued that helping someone become governor does not give anyone the right to take away that person’s independence.
In his words, “I used to defend the FCT Minister, I didn’t know, I was even saying that it was too short for the governor to react.”
