According to a statement shared on his official Facebook handle, prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmed Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has warned against silence in the face of oppression, stressing that injustice left unchecked carries consequences for the entire society.
In his post, Sheikh Gumi referenced a Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to underscore the moral responsibility placed on individuals and communities to confront wrongdoing whenever it arises. He wrote:
“If people see an oppressor and do not stop him (prevent him from his injustice), it is likely that Allah will punish them all together”.
The cleric explained that the message of the Hadith goes beyond personal piety and speaks directly to collective accountability. According to him, oppression thrives not only because of the actions of those who commit it, but also because of the silence or fear of those who witness it and choose not to act. He emphasized that Islam encourages believers to stand firmly for justice, even when doing so is uncomfortable or comes at personal cost.
Sheikh Gumi noted that societies often suffer widespread consequences when injustice is normalized or tolerated, adding that divine punishment, as mentioned in the Hadith, reflects the seriousness of ignoring oppression. He urged Muslims and leaders alike to reflect deeply on their roles in promoting fairness, peace, and accountability within their communities.
The Islamic scholar also called on people to use lawful and peaceful means to prevent injustice, reminding them that speaking out against wrongdoing is a form of moral duty. He encouraged dialogue, advocacy, and responsible leadership as key tools in addressing societal challenges.
