In a recent video shared on Facebook on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain, Asari Dokubo, launched a sharp criticism against Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, questioning his character and public interventions on national security and religious matters.
According to Dokubo, “As far as I’m concerned, Sheikh Gumi is not a good person.” He said his position was based on what he described as Gumi’s repeated public comments that appear to excuse or rationalize the actions of violent groups terrorizing communities across the country.
Dokubo argued that anyone who consistently speaks in a way that seems sympathetic to criminals cannot be regarded as acting in the interest of peace or justice. He maintained that religious leaders carry a heavy moral responsibility and must be careful not to send messages that could embolden those engaged in violence against innocent citizens.
The outspoken activist accused Gumi of deepening divisions through his statements, noting that Nigeria’s security crisis should not be framed along religious or ethnic lines. According to him, such narratives only worsen tensions and distract from the real task of protecting lives and restoring order.
Dokubo also stressed that his criticism was not an attack on Islam, emphasizing that he has been a Muslim for decades and understands the faith’s teachings on justice and the sanctity of life. He said Islam does not permit the defense of wrongdoing or the justification of terror under any circumstances.
He urged Nigerians to be discerning about the voices they listen to, warning that influential figures who normalize violence can cause lasting harm to society. Dokubo added that the country needs leaders, religious and political, who will speak clearly against evil without ambiguity.
Dokubo further stated that peace in Nigeria can only be achieved when those with public platforms act responsibly and place the value of human life above personal opinions, ideology, or misplaced sympathy for criminals
