US Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that he will seek to reimpose sweeping sanctions on Syria’s government if Damascus launches military operations against Syrian Kurds or the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In a post on his official X handle, Graham, a Republican lawmaker and close ally of former US President Donald Trump, said he would move swiftly to reinstate sanctions if Damascus launches an offensive. “If military action is taken by the Syrian government, I will do everything in my power to revive the Caesar Act sanctions, making them even more bone crushing,” he wrote.
The senator’s comments reflect growing concern in Washington over the security of Kurdish forces in northern Syria, who have played a central role in combating Islamic State militants alongside US-led coalition forces. The SDF, which is dominated by Kurdish fighters, has long faced pressure from regional and domestic actors opposed to its autonomy and influence.
The Caesar Act sanctions, which Graham referenced, were originally enacted to isolate Syria’s leadership economically and politically. The measures targeted individuals, businesses, and institutions accused of supporting human rights abuses and war crimes committed during Syria’s prolonged conflict.
Those sanctions were repealed by Trump in December last year, marking a major shift in US policy toward Damascus. The decision followed the removal of President Bashar al-Assad from power after more than a decade of civil war that devastated the country and displaced millions of Syrians.
Named after a former Syrian military photographer who documented alleged torture by the Assad government, the Caesar Act was widely regarded as one of the most severe sanctions regimes imposed on Syria.
