Amaka Apeh, the owner of a shop in Otobi Akpa, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, has recounted how bandits invaded her business premises and killed three people during a violent attack in the community.
Speaking in a video shared by Africa Independent Television (AIT), Apeh said the attackers arrived suddenly and were dressed in military-style uniforms, making them appear like security personnel. According to her, one of the men burst into her shop looking excited, shouting and speaking in a language she identified as Fulani, not Hausa. Fearing for her life, she quietly hid behind a door while they began looting her shop.
She said the bandits freely packed goods from the shelves and even took time to eat meat inside the shop, behaving as though they were not in a hurry. Apeh explained that the men stayed inside her shop for more than 13 minutes, during which she remained silent and hidden, hoping they would not discover her.
After the attackers finally left, she did not come out immediately. It was only when a neighbor came to check if she was still alive inside the shop that she gathered the courage to step outside. What she saw, she said, was shocking and heartbreaking.
Right in front of her shop, three people lay dead, having been shot by the bandits during the raid. Apeh described crying out in shock when she saw the bodies and realized that innocent lives had been lost just outside her door.
The incident has left residents of Otobi Akpa in fear and grief, as many continue to worry about their safety in the face of repeated attacks by armed groups in the area.
