According to a report by Al Jazeera English on Monday 22 September, 2025, Germany has added its voice to the growing list of nations urging Israel to hold back on any further annexation of the occupied West Bank. It Urged the Jewish state not to escalate tensions by moving to absorb more Palestinian territory.
A government spokesperson in Berlin stated clearly that Israel should not go ahead with additional claims over the West Bank – territory considered occupied under international law and at the heart of longstanding tensions. This warning follows a wave of recent diplomatic shifts, where countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia formally recognised the state of Palestine. Those recognitions have stirred the pot politically, both inside and outside of Israel.
In response, some Israeli officials on the far-right have begun pushing for more aggressive territorial moves. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for his hardline views, announced he plans to bring up the idea of annexing parts of the West Bank at the next cabinet meeting. He framed the move as a direct answer to the recent international recognitions of Palestinian statehood.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, another prominent far-right figure, didn’t mince words earlier this month either. He proposed a sweeping annexation plan that would see Israel take control of roughly 82% of the West Bank – a suggestion that has drawn immediate concern from global leaders.
While only one direct quote was made public, Germany’s stance was unmistakable: “There must be no further annexation of Palestinian territory,” the spokesperson said, marking a clear rebuke of the direction some in Israel’s leadership appear to be heading. See, More, Here>>>>
