In a recent interview on News Central TV, the political crisis in Rivers State featured prominently as discussions centred on the impeachment move initiated by members of the State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The programme examined allegations raised by lawmakers, internal party disagreements, and the growing concern over governance and stability in the state.
“These same people complaining, some received SUVs, others over ₦200 million,” was quoted during the interview as Emeka Bekee, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, reacted to the actions of the 26 lawmakers involved in the impeachment process. Bekee explained that his comments were directed at the legislators, questioning the basis of their grievances and their moral justification for accusing the governor of misconduct.
Bekee argued that Rivers State has been plagued by repeated political crises, which he said have distracted leaders from governance and slowed development. According to him, the persistent confrontation between the executive and the legislature has created unnecessary tension and uncertainty, with negative consequences for public administration and service delivery.
The APC chieftain described the impeachment move as politically driven rather than motivated by genuine constitutional concerns. He maintained that lawmakers who allegedly benefited from financial and material support should address questions surrounding their own conduct before pursuing allegations against the governor. Bekee stressed that such contradictions weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
He also dismissed claims that political agreements had been breached, stating that informal arrangements should not supersede the constitutional mandate freely given to an elected governor by the people. Bekee insisted that Governor Fubara should be allowed to carry out his duties without undue pressure and complete his term as provided by law.
