The leader of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Alaye Theophilus, has argued that the peace agreement mediated by President Bola Tinubu between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike has been effectively nullified by subsequent political developments, particularly the defection of state assembly members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an interview on Channels TV while reacting to the ongoing crisis between Fubara and Wike, Theophilus provided context for why he believes the original terms of the agreement no longer apply.
“Those agreements were done while they were in the PDP. You know, Mr. President, as the leader of the country and the leader of APC, when the incumbent speaker (Martins Amaewhule) of Rivers State made a declaration that he has decamped to the APC and that the PDP is taking them to court, what was the statement of Mr. President?” Theophilus asked.
He then quoted what he described as the president’s welcoming stance toward the defectors. “That he has new sons that have come to his party, that there is no way he will deny them. He will accommodate them and also allow them to operate as APC members in Rivers State before they went back to tell the world that they didn’t cross-carpet to the APC,” the IYC leader stated.
Theophilus argued that this development has fundamentally altered the political landscape. “As of today, the government of Rivers State have moved to the APC as a new son of Mr. President. And if Mr. President feels that ‘I have a new son,’ and in the APC constitution, we believe that every first-term governor is given the free will to go for a second term as instructed in the APC constitution, I believe that the people of Rivers State should abide by that,” he concluded.
