Senator Cotton dismissed demands from Venezuelan Vice President Deli Rodriguez for proof of life of Maduro. “The whole world will have proof of life soon when he’s wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs in an American court,” he said.
He emphasized that the U.S. never recognized Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader, a position shared by the Biden administration and much of the civilized world. Cotton pointed to an elected leader in exile in Spain as evidence of Venezuela’s fractured political landscape.
Looking ahead, Cotton stressed the need for a Venezuelan government that works with the U.S. to stop drug and human trafficking and end collusion with China, Cuba, and Iran. “What we want more than anything is a government in Venezuela that will build a more stable and prosperous Venezuela and protect our own backyard,” he said.
Cotton outlined what he hoped would be a key change in Venezuela’s future government policies, stating, “That’s one thing that we certainly would want to see the new Venezuelan government stop is its support for Cuba.” He suggested this would have significant consequences, noting that ending Venezuelan support “would put Cuba even more on the ropes than it already is.”
The Senator’s comments suggested a strategic opportunity to further isolate Cuba by disrupting its relationship with Venezuela. By cutting off the flow of discounted oil and other support from Venezuela, the United States could potentially accelerate political change in Cuba without direct military intervention.
