In a recent post on his official Facebook page, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has called on Nigeria to immediately halt all forms of military cooperation with the United States, citing what he described as America’s imperial tendencies and warning that continued engagement could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Gumi argued that Nigeria must be cautious in its security partnerships, especially with global powers whose foreign policies, he said, are driven by strategic dominance rather than genuine concern for local stability. “Nigeria should halt all military cooperation with the USA immediately because of its imperial tendencies worldwide,” he said.
The cleric advised the Federal Government to instead seek assistance from countries he described as more neutral and less politically intrusive. According to him, Nigeria’s security challenges should be addressed through partnerships that respect national independence and do not expose the country to global power rivalries. “We should seek the help of those neutral countries mentioned,” Gumi stated, without compromising our sovereignty.
Gumi warned that foreign military involvement often comes with hidden costs, including political pressure, loss of autonomy and the risk of becoming entangled in international conflicts. He maintained that Nigeria must learn from global examples where external interventions worsened internal crises rather than resolving them. “History has shown that imperial powers do not come without interests,” he said.
He also stressed that Nigerians are increasingly politically aware and cannot be easily manipulated by fear-driven narratives. “Nigerians are too educated to be played with,” Gumi declared, noting that citizens now question policies that threaten unity and independence.
According to the cleric, the debate over Nigeria’s foreign military alliances will not fade away and is likely to shape future political conversations. “This is going to be a 2027 campaign discourse,” he said, suggesting that voters will scrutinize candidates’ positions on sovereignty, security partnerships and foreign influence.
