LP: “There’re People I Must Consult, First Is Tinubu, To Let Him Understand That It Is Time–Showunmi

According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, December 21, 2025, the Convener of the Alternative Movement, Chief Segun Showunmi, has stated that the Labour Party should not be regarded as a weak or insignificant political force in Nigeria.

He said the party has demonstrated its strength through electoral performance and growing national presence, insisting that it deserves serious attention within the country’s political space.

According to him, the party’s performance in the last general election showed that it has moved beyond the status of a fringe political platform.

Showunmi noted that the Labour Party secured about six million votes in the last general election, a figure he described as significant when compared to the over eight million votes recorded by the ruling party.

He explained that this outcome reflects a strong base of support across different parts of the country and highlights the party’s capacity to compete at the highest level.

He added that such figures should not be ignored when assessing the relevance of any political party in Nigeria.

The political activist made these remarks while hosting newly elected executive committee members and party leaders from the state at a meeting held over the weekend in Abeokuta.

During the engagement, discussions focused on the future of the party, its internal structure, and preparations for upcoming political activities.

The gathering also served as an opportunity for party leaders to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the Labour Party’s presence at both state and national levels.

Showunmi disclosed that the party had approached him to serve as its flag bearer in the forthcoming election.
