Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has commended the release of Nigerian Air Force personnel who were previously held by the military junta led by Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Sani made the remarks in a post shared on his verified X account on Thursday, December 18, 2025. In the post, the former lawmaker described the development as a positive outcome of diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and Burkina Faso.
He wrote, “The release of the Nigerian Airforce men held by the Ibrahim Traore led military junta is commendable.” Sani attributed the outcome to the diplomatic interventions carried out by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He stated, “Tuggar’s diplomatic shuttle bears fruit.”
The release of the detained personnel followed weeks of diplomatic efforts amid strained relations between some West African states and military-led governments in the region. The detained Nigerian Air Force personnel were reportedly held during a period of heightened security concerns and political tension involving military authorities in Burkina Faso.
Sani’s remarks also touched on broader African unity and inter-state relations. He wrote, “As Africans,we need to constantly remind ourselves that we are brothers and sisters who should not be lackeys or pawns of neocolonialists and imperialists.”
The former senator cautioned against external influence in African affairs. He stated, “Whose interest in our continent is basically our resources, and it’s easier and more accessible to them when we are in conflict with each other.”
