According to a report by Sky News on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Sussan Ley, leader of the opposition in Australia, addressed a memorial gathering at Bondi Beach, calling for stronger measures to protect the country’s Jewish communities.
In her speech, Ley stressed the need for decisive action against hate speech and extremist behavior.
“My message is this, if I am prime minister and you practise hate speech and you talk about radical Islam in a way that harms and hurts your fellow man and woman, and if you glorify hatred… if you do these things and you are not an Australian citizen, you will be deported. And if you are an Australian citizen, you will be arrested,” she said.
Ley further emphasized that the current government must take more responsibility in safeguarding the safety of Australian Jews. “I will force this government to take the action it needs to” ensure their protection, she added.
The opposition leader also drew attention to the rising concerns on university campuses, where she says troubling incidents of hate and intolerance have occurred. She remarked, “This cannot go on,” highlighting the urgency of addressing these issues to prevent further harm.
Ley’s comments come amid heightened awareness of threats to minority communities and debates over government responsibility in combating hate speech and extremism. Her speech at the memorial was a call for both immediate and long-term measures to maintain public safety and protect vulnerable groups.
