General Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has spoken about the vital role General Muhammadu Buhari played during the 1983 military clash between Nigeria and Chad. Marwa said that when Chadian soldiers invaded Nigeria and seized some islands, Buhari, who was then a top military commander, quickly took control of the situation.
In a video shared by NTA, General Marwa said Buhari relocated his office to Maiduguri to personally lead the operation. Marwa explained that Buhari led operation to push the Chadian forces out of the occupied areas. He said Nigerian troops, under Buhari’s command, not only reclaimed the islands but also pursued the Chadians all the way to the outskirts of N’Djamena, Chad’s capital.
In Marwa’s words: “When the Chadians entered Nigeria and took over some of our islands General Buhari relocated his headquarters to Maiduguri, took charge of the operation personally and flushed the Chadians out and actually went on a pursuit. He went within artillery range of N’Djamena and if he had not been stopped maybe today Chad would have been another state of Nigeria.
