Retired military officer Captain Babangida Aliyu has criticized the current structure at the Ministry of Defence, alleging that placing Minister of State Bello Matawalle above Defence Minister General Christopher Musa creates an inappropriate hierarchical status.
Speaking during an interview with Nigerian Info FM, Captain Aliyu questioned the logic behind making a superior officer report to his former subordinate. “Why would you take a subordinate and put him above his superior, then humiliate the superior by having him report to his subordinate? What else are we not being told here? Exactly. What are we not being told? Behaviorally, I don’t think any sane human being will feel good about it,” he said.
The retired officer argued that while General Musa brings military expertise, the Ministry operates as a civil service structure where Matawalle possesses superior institutional knowledge of cabinet procedures and administrative files.
Captain Aliyu proposed allowing the Defence Minister to select his own Minister of State, enabling him to choose someone familiar rather than working under a subordinate—a situation he suggested undermines morale and effectiveness.
