Former Defence spokesperson Major General John Enenche (Rtd.) has alleged that military coups ended in Nigeria after General Sani Abacha’s death because the armed forces recognized they suffered underfunding under military rule.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Major General Enenche explained the shift in military institutional thinking over the past three decades. “After the last coup in Abacha’s time, for about 30 to 35 years when we were in service, the training and the teaching, the orientation we were given, is that military government is out of it because we are even the first organization to feel it,” he said.
The retired general cited neglected equipment procurement as evidence of military self-interest in maintaining democratic governance. “What has happened to our equipment today? The equipment we were supposed to be restocking at that time were stopped. So the military is not better off at all under a military government. We are soft, and we are still now. So how will they come to power?” Enenche stated.
He dismissed concerns about recent coup rumors in Benin Republic spreading to Nigeria. Major General Enenche expressed confidence that such events remain impossible in Nigeria because younger soldiers are committed to democratic governance and loyal to the federal government.
