“I May Be One Of The Most Insulted Priests For Telling The Truth To Nigerian Christians”-Fr Kelvin

Fr Kelvin Ugwu has expressed his frustration over the vitriol he receives online simply for speaking what he believes to be the truth to Nigerian Christians. According to him, the attacks are relentless and often deeply personal, despite his intentions being rooted in honest reflection and spiritual guidance.

He recounted his recent trip to Las Vegas in September, where he attended a Christian conference and was struck by the atmosphere of devotion and respect he encountered. “In most of our sessions, you could feel the aura of what true Christianity is,” he said. Ugwu noted that in these gatherings, participants focused on genuine worship and fellowship. “You never heard anyone talk about killing demons at night. Nobody was praying ‘die by fire,’ and nobody was formulating gibberish and calling it speaking in tongues,” he added.

Ugwu was particularly impressed by the civility and discipline of the people he met in Las Vegas. Despite the city’s reputation as a bustling tourist hub set in a desert, he observed that life there functions smoothly, with people being courteous, respectful, and sincerely devoted to their faith. “Things work remarkably well,” he noted.

However, his attempt to draw parallels and offer honest observations to Nigerian Christians has not been well received. He lamented that instead of constructive dialogue, he faces insults from believers who, in his view, misrepresent the essence of Christianity online. “Make the mistake of telling the truth to Nigerian Christians, and watch people who claim they pray and fast every day use insults and words in ways that even an unbeliever would never imagine could come from a believer,” he wrote.

Fr Ugwu criticized what he described as a performative form of Christianity online, where some individuals focus on dramatic declarations of “casting out demons” or cursing others rather than genuine spiritual growth. “This evening again, this set of online demon-killer Christians will gather on social media, shouting at the top of their voices about how demons must die by fire and how those monitoring them must die by fire. Tomorrow morning, they will repeat the same thing,” he said.
