Omoyele Sowore, activist and former presidential candidate, addressed journalists earlier today, Tuesday, December 2, 2025. During the briefing, he spoke extensively about the government’s handling of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to Sowore, the authorities believed that transferring Kanu to a prison facility in Sokoto would diminish his influence and subject him to ridicule. However, he argued that the plan has produced the opposite outcome.
Sowore explained that despite the government’s expectations, the situation in Sokoto has elevated, rather than reduced, Kanu’s symbolic presence. He noted that supporters and sympathizers continue to gather and show solidarity, turning the location into a destination that draws significant attention. In his view, this development confirms earlier warnings that relocating Kanu to a distant region would not weaken his popularity.
In his own words, Sowore stated: “When they were taking him to Sokoto, they thought they will ridicule him. When he got there, he has turned Sokoto to another Mecca. That’s exactly what we predicted.” He emphasized that the government underestimated the resilience of Kanu’s supporters and the broader movement connected to his detention.
Sowore also made a pointed remark regarding Justice Omotosho, asserting that he personally has the capacity to assist him if he wants to go to Sokoto to see Mr Kanu. He said: “But if he wants to go, tell him to contact me. I will arrange his safe passage to Sokoto.” This comment underscored his confidence in understanding the dynamics surrounding Kanu’s detention and the public response it continues to generate.
