A Public Affairs Analyst, Dr. Majeed Dahiru, has suggested that the government should evacuate communities living in conflict zones in the North East and authorize a year-long aerial military operation to eliminate the insurgency threat.
Speaking during an interview with Nigeria Info FM, Dr. Dahiru outlined his strategy for defeating terrorists in the region. “Now, to stop this terrorists in the North East, flip the warfare away from unconventional to conventional, where the army was trained to operate fully. How do you do it? Evacuate people from the theater and let the army and the air force, and the navy carry out at least one full year of aerial, armor, and artillery clearance operations,” he said.
The analyst described that the second phase involves ground operations after intensive bombardment. “And that by the time you finish that operation, we are done saturating the place with enough bombardment, both by land and by air and by sea, you would have so weakened the group that when you send in ground troops, it will simply be to clear and occupy. This hide-and-seek we are doing with these people is to their advantage. The army is not trained to do that,” he explained.
Dr. Dahiru argued that Nigeria cannot continue fighting an asymmetrical war while losing significant numbers of troops. He alleged that with assistance from international partners including the United States, France, and possibly Russia, Nigeria could acquire drones and sophisticated ammunition necessary for engaging terrorists effectively.
