Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former spokesperson for the Arewa Consultative Forum, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s recent list of ambassadorial nominees submitted to the National Assembly breaches principles of fairness and equity. In an interview with Channels TV, Baba-Ahmed pointed out a significant imbalance in the regional representation of the nominees, highlighting that around nine ambassadors come from the southwest, which is Tinubu’s region, while some other regions have as few as three or five nominees. He emphasized the need for President Tinubu to be more receptive to these concerns, stating that while merit is important, it is insufficient in a diverse nation like Nigeria, where attention to regional representation is essential.
He remarked, “In a country like Nigeria, it’s crucial to recognize where individuals come from.” He noted that Tinubu already bears the burden of favoring the southwest disproportionately, referencing the fact that out of approximately 36 or 37 ambassadors, nine are from a single region. Despite his critique of the distribution, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged the significance of Tinubu’s effort to nominate ambassadors after Nigeria’s lengthy absence in the global diplomatic arena. He expressed hope that the National Assembly would exercise its duty by carefully examining the qualifications of each nominee to ensure that capable representatives advocate for Nigeria internationally.
