The Bishop of the Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, Rt. Rev. Iyke Egbuonu has shared fresh insight into the condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, following a visit to the Sokoto prison where he is currently being held.
The cleric spoke during an interview on AIT Live News, recounting his observations and conversations during the visit.
Bishop Egbuonu explained that he embarked on the visit to ascertain Kanu’s wellbeing amid growing concerns from supporters and members of the public over his state of health. According to him, although Kanu expressed worry about certain medical issues, he appeared mentally stable and in relatively good spirits.
The bishop noted that the IPOB leader discussed his health challenges, particularly his heart condition, which has been a recurring subject of public debate. The cleric, however, emphasized that while he could not independently verify the type or quality of medical attention Kanu is receiving in detention, he found him emotionally stronger than expected. “He made mention of his heart condition, I don’t know how he is being taken care of in the prison but in all, he is not depressed as I thought,” Bishop Egbuonu said.
He stressed that the visit was pastoral rather than political, explaining that the church has a responsibility to offer spiritual support to all, irrespective of their circumstances. Egbuonu also urged the government to ensure that all detainees, including Kanu, are treated humanely and provided with adequate healthcare in line with constitutional provisions and international standards.
