We Are Not Killing Christians,& Christians Are Not Killing Muslims”-Gumi Fires Back At Donald Trump

In a recent interview on Channels Television, Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi responded directly to comments made by President Donald Trump regarding religious violence in Nigeria. Gumi, who is widely known for his views on national security and interfaith relations, rejected the notion that Nigeria is experiencing a religious war between Christians and Muslims.

Addressing the issue, Gumi stated firmly that “We are not killing Christians, and Christians are not killing Muslims.” He explained that labeling Nigeria as a nation divided along religious lines is misleading and could inflame unnecessary tensions, both within the country and internationally.

According to Gumi, most violent incidents in Nigeria are driven by banditry, terrorism, and local conflicts over resources, not religion. He noted that many attacks occur within communities where both victims and perpetrators share the same faith, demonstrating that religious affiliation is not the primary factor in the violence.

The cleric cautioned that statements framing Nigeria’s crisis as a religious conflict could worsen tensions and give extremists a dangerous narrative. He urged President Trump and other global leaders to seek accurate, nuanced information before making public statements that could misrepresent the situation on the ground.

Responding to critics who suggest religion plays a significant role in these conflicts, Gumi emphasized that Christians and Muslims in Nigeria have coexisted peacefully for decades. He stressed that the country’s diversity is a strength and that focusing on criminality and governance issues is the key to resolving violence.

Gumi concluded by calling on Nigerians to unite against crime, banditry, and terrorism rather than allowing external mischaracterizations to divide them. He also encouraged leaders at all levels to prioritize truth, responsible communication, and practical measures that promote peace and stability.
