In a recent video on Signature TV, public affairs commentator Ikechukwu Onyia provided a thorough analysis of the issues surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s conviction, arguing that the legal team has little to build on for the appeal.

Onyia questioned, “He never opened his defense; on what grounds will he appeal, or is it that he didn’t kill?”—a remark that highlighted concerns about the appeal’s foundations. He pointed out that Kanu’s failure to present a defense during the trial means the appellate court lacks any counter-evidence, complicating the case for Kanu’s lawyers.

He mentioned that the prosecution presented multiple video recordings and live broadcasts, purportedly depicting Kanu inciting violence and coordinating attacks against security forces and public property damage. These videos were shown in court and not contested by the defense, further diminishing the chances of a successful appeal.

Onyia also rejected claims that Kanu’s arrest in Kenya tainted the judgment. He noted that the Supreme Court has determined that arrest circumstances do not nullify the charges or the criminal allegations presented. He argued that appealing based on technicalities won’t overshadow the substantial evidence already introduced during the trial.

Regarding the situation in the Southeast, Onyia stated that peace has largely been restored in the region, with the dismantling of violent groups associated with the agitation contributing to the stability. He pointed out that the absence of protests following Kanu’s sentencing indicates that people have moved past earlier unrest.

In conclusion, while Kanu’s team has the constitutional right to appeal, Onyia believes the chances of success are low due to the strong evidence against him and the lack of a formal defense during the trial.
