Kanu: “Let Igbos Stop Being Emotional, I Want Us To Settle Down, The Man Can Be Released-Orji Kalu

According to a report by The Cable on Monday, November 24, 2025, Orji Kalu, senator representing Abia North, has said that separatist agitations linked to Nnamdi Kanu have caused severe loss of lives and widespread destruction across the south-east.

He made his comments after a federal high court in Abuja sentenced the IPOB leader to life imprisonment, a development that has drawn renewed attention to the humanitarian impact of the unrest.

Kalu stressed that the situation has gone beyond political disagreements and now demands a careful and coordinated effort to prevent further harm, including the appeal he made for stakeholders to avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

Orji Kalu said the violence associated with the agitations has claimed more than 30,000 lives over the years.

He noted that these deaths cut across various communities and affected both urban and rural areas, leaving many families struggling to recover.

The senator explained that the region has continued to experience avoidable tragedies because the underlying issues have not been addressed with the seriousness they require.

Orji Kalu stated that the public has focused largely on security casualties, which has overshadowed the impact on civilians.

According to him, many residents who had no involvement in the crisis have suffered heavy losses, including the destruction of businesses, homes, and livelihoods.

He maintained that the economic damage in the region is deep and has kept many families trapped in hardship.

Orji Kalu added that he has seen firsthand how the unrest has disrupted the lives of ordinary citizens.

He recalled a case involving his late mother’s friend whose rice business was completely destroyed during one of the violent incidents.

He Said several other families across the south-east share similar experiences, with many still unable to rebuild their means of survival.

Orji Kalu emphasized that political actors and supporters must avoid steps that could further complicate the situation.

He urged them to act responsibly and consider the long-term safety of the region.

He warned that any attempt to inflame emotions or deepen divisions would only worsen an already fragile environment.

Orji Kalu called for a political solution to the crisis, saying it remains the most realistic way to ease tension and restore stability.

He explained that continued confrontation would not solve the problem and that dialogue must be prioritized to protect communities from further loss.

He insisted that leaders across the south-east should work together to chart a path that supports peace.

Orji Kalu appealed to stakeholders in the region to focus on efforts that could lead to the release of Nnamdi Kanu through lawful and peaceful means.

He said resolving the matter requires patience and collective responsibility, and he encouraged residents to support initiatives that aim to restore calm and rebuild affected communities.

He said: “Let Igbos stop being emotional. I want us to settle down, go on our knees and find a way that the man can be released. It’s part of my job to do it.”
