“If Not For Kanu, My Family’s Hometown Would Still Be a Place Of Peace And Safety,” Joe Igbokwe Says

Joe Igbokwe has stated that the unrest caused by Nnamdi Kanu and his followers has turned his family’s hometown from a peaceful community into a desolate and unsafe area. According to Igbokwe in a recent Facebook post, a place that should have been a safe haven for his children and future generations has been left in ruins due to violence and destruction.

He stated that during the unrest, the Igwe’s palace was set ablaze, and numerous families were killed. Elderly residents were forced to leave their homes, many uncertain if they would ever return. “The trauma inflicted on our people is real, and the scars of Kanu’s actions will remain for years,” Igbokwe said, describing the dire conditions that now define the community.

While condemning the violence, Igbokwe also highlighted what he described as a failure on the part of the Igbo elite to use their wealth to improve communities. He stated that despite the presence of billionaires in Ala Igbo, local towns remain underdeveloped, with resources often diverted to personal luxury rather than communal growth. “We have money and influence, yet our communities still suffer,” he said.

Igbokwe also emphasized the need for self-reflection among the Igbo people. “Yes, we are marginalized in many ways, but we also need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves what we have done for our communities,” he stated. He warned that trauma from past conflicts should not prevent constructive action, insisting that meaningful progress requires both accountability and initiative.

Criticizing divisive rhetoric, Igbokwe stated that hate preaching has misled many people, creating anger and mistrust instead of unity. “Many have been brainwashed to think violence and revenge are solutions, but they only prolong suffering,” he said.

He called on the Igbo community to take responsibility for rebuilding and safeguarding their towns. Igbokwe stated that wealth should be used for community development, power should be exercised responsibly, and reason should guide actions.

“The peace and safety that once defined my hometown could have continued if not for Kanu and his followers,” he concluded. “It is time for us to rebuild, reflect, and ensure that the next generation inherits a place of stability and hope.”
