Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that election manipulation often begins long before people cast their votes. He said the process can be influenced right from the registration of political parties, down to how voters are registered. He said even the way ballot boxes are placed can be used to make sure some communities never get the chance to vote properly

In a video shared by Symfoni TV, Obasanjo said he was surprised when a British minister told him that even in Britain, there had been cases where dead people were counted as voters

Obasanjo said Nigeria inherited the system of western liberal democracy from countries like Britain. He said if the same system still produces such flaws in the countries that created it then African nations, including Nigeria, may need to rethink how they practice democracy

In Obasanjo’s words: “I was surprised when a British minister told me that even in Britain they find dead people voting. Those are the people from whom we inherited this western liberal democracy. If they are displeased with it, shouldn’t we rethink what we have inherited?
