Former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, criticized Adamawa State governor Ahmadu Fintiri over the latter’s reaction to the recent expulsion of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose; and the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
According to The Nigerian Tribune, he also noted that other party officials were axed for alleged anti-party activities during the party’s elective National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in the presence of the party national chairman, Umar Damagun. Those affected included Imo State PDP Chairman Austine Nwachukwu, Abia State PDP Chairman Amah Nnanna, PDP South-south Zonal Secretary Turnah George, National Organising Secretary Umaru Bature, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, Mao Ohuabunwa (factional BoT chairman), and Dan Orbih from Edo State.
Speaking in a telephone interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Chief George, who had moved the motion for the expulsion of the FCT Minister, accused Governor Fintiri of lacking sincerity in his recent stance and faulted the decision taken at the convention. He recalled that Governor Fintiri had expressed concern on his official X handle that the expulsion could further polarize the party. Fintiri had dissociated himself from the action and urged all stakeholders to work towards healing divisions within the party, emphasizing his commitment to promoting peace, stability, and progress within the PDP.
Chief George, whose motion had been seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman Samaila Buga and put to a voice vote by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, maintained that the decision taken at the National Convention, and supported by delegates, was in the best interest of the party. He added that the action had resonated well with delegates, who accepted it as a major step towards instilling sanity in the party.
He said, “By our Constitution, the Convention is the highest organ. If Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was opposed to it, why did not he say it there? He was seated there. Does it mean that the people of Adamawa are with him?
“The party is not owned by any individual. The delegates have said ‘enough is enough’. The people expelled cannot be bigger than the party. They started the crisis in the party and it was spreading like cancer.”
