In a video shared on Facebook, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain, Asari Dokubo, responded fiercely to recent comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. Dokubo, who expressed disapproval of Gumi’s public statements regarding religion and national issues, asserted his own deep understanding of Islam and dismissed any suggestion that he was ignorant of the faith.
Quoting his words, Dokubo said, “I have been a Muslim for 38 years, and I know Islam well.” He emphasized that his long-standing commitment to Islam gives him the authority to speak on religious and moral matters, adding that he would not tolerate Gumi’s attempts to distort the true teachings of the religion for political or sectarian purposes.
Dokubo accused Gumi of using religion as a cover for divisive and dangerous rhetoric that fuels mistrust among Nigerians. He argued that true Islam promotes peace, justice, and fairness, not the defense of violence or the justification of criminal behavior. “Being a Muslim does not mean supporting wrongdoers. Islam teaches truth and righteousness,” he stated.
He further warned that Nigeria’s peace and unity could be threatened if religious leaders continue to make statements that favor criminals or discriminate against certain groups. Dokubo called on Muslims across the country to uphold the real values of Islam—compassion, tolerance, and respect for humanity.
His comments have since sparked a nationwide conversation about the role of clerics and religious leaders in promoting peace and understanding. While many praised his courage to challenge Gumi, others urged both men to focus on reconciliation and unity within the Muslim community.
