Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has spoken out following the recent altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a group of military officers in Abuja’s Gaduwa District.
The incident unfolded when soldiers allegedly barred the minister and officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from gaining access to a contentious parcel of land.
The soldiers were acting on the orders of former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd), who had begun development activities on the property without the necessary approval or legal ownership.
Olayinka expressed his disappointment over the actions of the military personnel, describing the episode as “an embarrassment.”
He recounted how the situation unfolded, noting that the conduct of the officer involved was particularly shocking.
“That is why I said this is an embarrassment and it is. And could you also imagine that even right there, the minister called the Chief of Defense Staff and gave the phone to the officer. I saw the way he collected the phone and I saw the way he was even talking to the Chief of Defense Staff. I was shocked. I was embarrassed.”
Olayinka further emphasized that such incidents undermine the authority of the FCT Administration and violate due process, stressing that no individual, regardless of rank or position, is above the law.
