Kenneth Okonkwo, a veteran Nollywood actor and political analyst, has cautioned against any attempt to consolidate all Igbo people into a single geopolitical zone, arguing that such a move would diminish the strategic advantage of Ndigbo in Nigeria’s political landscape.
In an interview with SYMFONI TV, Okonkwo emphasized that the Igbo are a majority tribe with significant populations spread across the Southeast, South-South, and Northern regions of Nigeria. He warned that merging them into one zone would reduce their influence and limit opportunities for equitable representation in federal appointments.
Okonkwo explained that the Federal Character Commission requires national appointments to reflect Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical zones. He said that an Igbo president would lose the flexibility to appoint fellow Igbos from multiple zones if they were all grouped into one, thereby weakening the tribe’s political leverage.
Okonkwo said,
“Ndi Igbo as a majority tribe has spread in the southeast, in the south-south, and in the north. So any attempt by anybody to say let the whole Igbo come into one zone to become one geopolitical zone, you are actually diminishing Ndigbo, you are actually removing that advantage you have as a majority tribe. Because any Igbo president will not have the opportunity to appoint Igbos from the three geopolitical zones and still claim he has not offended the Federal Character Commission.”
