In a recent interview on Arise TV, Umar Sani, a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements about Nigeria may be politically motivated rather than purely humanitarian.
Sani said, “Donald Trump has some political motives, which is why he is coming with such vengeance.” He was referring to Trump’s declaration labeling Nigeria as a country of “particular concern,” claiming that Christians are being targeted, and warning that America might intervene to protect them.
He criticized the remarks, stressing that the focus should be on the protection of all lives in Nigeria, not religion. “The primary responsibility of any government is to safeguard lives and property—Muslims, Christians, or non-believers alike. Many lives have been lost across the country, and political agendas should not determine the value of human life,” Sani said.
Sani also warned against undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty. “Our country belongs to all Nigerians, not any party or government. Anyone denigrating Nigeria is denigrating all of us,” he added.
While addressing the PDP’s internal matters, including the upcoming national convention, Sani maintained that the party remains focused on larger national concerns, such as citizen safety and responsible governance.
His comments highlight a growing concern among Nigerian leaders about foreign interference framed under religious claims, emphasizing patriotism, national unity, and the protection of all citizens regardless of faith.
