Political analyst Segun Showunmi has warned that Nigeria must act fast to avoid facing serious international punishment after being named a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the United States government during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
In a post via X, Showunmi explained that this kind of designation means the U.S. believes Nigeria’s government is not doing enough to protect religious freedom, especially after reports of attacks and killings against Christians. He said that being labeled a CPC puts pressure on the entire government, not just a few people. It can lead to diplomatic condemnation, strained relations with other countries, and even economic sanctions that hurt the nation’s image and trade opportunities.
He also talked about another law known as the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. and its allies to punish specific individuals responsible for human rights violations or corruption. Under this law, those found guilty could have their assets frozen, be banned from traveling abroad, and face other personal sanctions.
Showunmi warned that when the CPC label and the Magnitsky Act are applied together, the effects become more serious. The CPC designation tells a country, “Your government is violating religious freedom,” while the Magnitsky Act says, “We know who is responsible, and they will face consequences.”
He advised Nigerian leaders to be careful, make real reforms, and take steps to protect citizens’ rights, stressing that only genuine action can prevent Nigeria from facing a major diplomatic and economic crisis.
In his words, “At the systemic level, a CPC designation targets an entire government or state apparatus. It results in diplomatic condemnation, policy pressure, and, in some cases, sanctions.”
