Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized United States President Donald Trump’s decision to label Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” describing it as unfounded, divisive, and driven by misinformation about religious persecution in the country.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account, Sani said there is absolutely no Christian genocide in Nigeria, insisting that Trump’s declaration was based on “false, misleading, and mischievous narratives” aimed at creating division and distrust among Nigerians.
“The real situation in Nigeria over the past fifteen years is that terrorists and bandits have targeted Nigerians of all faiths. Muslims have, in fact, suffered more casualties because of the areas in which these terrorists operate,” Sani said, noting that even the United States Envoy in Nigeria recently confirmed this reality.
He added that with Nigeria’s demographic composition, religious persecution is “technically impossible,” emphasizing that extremists attack both mosques and churches, kill imams and pastors, and kidnap Muslims and Christians alike.
Sani also condemned the bill sponsored by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, which seeks action against individuals implementing Sharia and blasphemy laws, describing it as “a direct and unjust attack on the legal and religious principles of Muslims in Nigeria.”
“Nigeria is an independent country. No foreign leader, foreign interest, or foreign nation can or should dictate to Nigerians how they choose to govern themselves, run their affairs, or practice their religion,” he said.
The former senator urged the U.S. government to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism instead of issuing threats or promoting policies that deepen division. He warned that Nigerians spreading misinformation abroad for personal political gain would only damage the country’s reputation.
“Nigeria will overcome its challenges,” Sani concluded.
