According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Ahmad Gumi, controversial Islamic cleric, has described the presidential pardon granted to Maryam Sanda as the best approach, following her conviction for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, in 2020.
Gumi spoke about the case in a post on Facebook, emphasizing Sanda’s remorse and framing her actions as influenced by Shaytan. He pointed out that her immediate regret after the incident reflected her recognition of wrongdoing.
Maryam Sanda was initially sentenced to death for the murder of her husband.
The case drew national attention when President Bola Tinubu granted her a pardon, alongside 174 other convicts, which included individuals convicted of drug trafficking, kidnapping, and fraud, the pardon was widely covered and became a topic of public discussion.

The revocation was communicated in a statement released by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, clarifying the change in decision, this reversal sparked debates on the use of presidential powers in granting clemency.

Authorities reduced her punishment to twelve years in prison, taking into consideration the welfare and future of her children, this decision aimed to balance justice with humanitarian concerns.
In his commentary, Gumi highlighted Sanda’s emotional response to her actions, he described how she stabbed her husband and immediately broke down crying over his body.
According to him, her reaction indicated that her actions were influenced by Shaytan rather than an absence of remorse or moral awareness.
