Bad Roads: Julius Berger Removed Asphalt, They Said They Want To Grind It With Laterite -Umahi

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has criticized the construction methods used on Nigerian roads, particularly by Julius Berger, as reported by VANGUARD on Wednesday October 29 2025.

This statement was made during his inspection of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road project on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

His remarks follow growing concerns over the recurring failures of major road projects across the country, some of which begin to deteriorate even before completion.

However, during the inspection, Umahi pointed out that the problem lies in the outdated construction techniques still being used by contractors.

He explained that Julius Berger removed the existing asphalt and replaced it with fresh laterite, a method he described as technically flawed.

David Umahi said,

“When Julius Berger was doing the job, they removed the asphalt. They said they want to grind it with laterite… It is not a good construction method because they brought new laterite on the road… the compaction and consolidation will not be as it has consolidated over the years… So, it is bound to fail and that is why you see that what Julius Berger completed was beginning to see failures, even while they were still constructing.”
