In a recent interview shared by Arise News, Lawyer and Public Affairs Analyst, Frank Tietie expressed strong concerns over the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, without trial. Tietie described the situation as a clear contradiction to the principles of justice and democracy, emphasizing that due process must always prevail.
According to him, “You cannot keep a man for five years without trial; I know how palpable insecurity in southeast is.” He noted that while the government may have security concerns, it must operate within the boundaries of the law and uphold fundamental human rights as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
Tietie argued that prolonged detention without conviction not only violates court orders but also erodes public trust in the judicial system. He further advised the federal government to demonstrate leadership by ensuring that the rule of law takes precedence over political or security interests.
He added that granting Nnamdi Kanu a fair hearing or considering a presidential pardon could help restore peace and stability in the Southeast region. The legal analyst concluded by calling for restraint on both sides, urging government institutions to respect legal procedures to preserve Nigeria’s democratic integrity and global image.
