The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has released a detailed account accusing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), of being responsible for widespread violence and destruction across Nigeria’s Southeast region.
Speaking on Trust TV, Jamilu Charanchi, the National Coordinator of the coalition, alleged that Kanu’s activities and the secessionist movement he leads have caused extensive human and material losses. According to Charanchi, “He has claimed over 1,200 innocent lives, including more than 400 security personnel, burned over 100 police stations, and caused destruction of property worth over ₦450 billion across the Southeast.”
Charanchi described the toll of the unrest as devastating, citing repeated attacks on security operatives and public facilities. The alleged burning of more than 100 police stations and the killing of hundreds of officers, he said, reflect the grave security challenges tied to pro-Biafra agitations. He also emphasized the massive economic losses suffered by both government and private citizens in the affected areas, estimating the total damage at over ₦450 billion.
The coalition’s claims come amid ongoing debates surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention and trial. His supporters continue to regard him as a freedom fighter seeking self-determination for the Igbo people, while critics accuse him of inciting violence and destabilizing the Southeast.
The CNG’s position underscores deep divisions over the IPOB leader’s legacy and the broader consequences of the secessionist movement. While some call for Kanu’s release on human rights grounds, others insist that accountability for the alleged loss of lives and destruction must take precedence in the interest of national security and justice.
