Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has shared new details about the heated aftermath of his 2013 re-election as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), revealing that he stood firm despite immense political pressure to resign.
In a video shared by The Guardian Nigeria, Amaechi recounted how he was approached by several political figures urging him to step down following his controversial victory. Among them was Pius Anyim, who served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation at the time.
According to him, “I told Pius Anyim I wouldn’t resign because I was ready for the consequences of the election.” Amaechi explained that his decision to resist pressure came from a conviction that his victory was legitimate and that yielding to political intimidation would set a dangerous precedent for democratic leadership.
He recalled that his re-election had sparked deep divisions within the ruling circle, with efforts made to delegitimize the outcome and isolate him politically. Amaechi noted that he had already anticipated the backlash before the election but remained resolute in defending his mandate.
The former governor added that his insistence on transparency in the management of public funds and his opposition to the alleged transfer of Rivers State oil wells to neighbouring states further strained his relationship with those in power.
Amaechi said the episode taught him valuable lessons about political courage and personal conviction, describing it as one of the most defining experiences of his career.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
