Alwan Hassan, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has questioned the significance of academic qualifications in determining leadership ability, arguing that university degrees alone do not guarantee effective governance or communication skills.
Hassan made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, 3 August, 2026, while defending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against criticisms over his academic records. He contended that the focus on educational qualifications should not overshadow a leader’s performance in office.
Speaking during the interview, Hassan said, “Let’s say he has not even gone to the University, tell me what Jonathan’s PhD has done to Nigeria. Tell me how Obi’s BSc has helped improve his communication skills.”
The APC member argued that political leaders should be assessed based on their contributions and achievements rather than the academic certificates they possess. According to him, holding advanced degrees does not automatically translate into effective governance or exceptional leadership.
Hassan’s remarks came as he responded to the ongoing debate over Tinubu’s educational credentials, an issue that has remained in the public spotlight since the 2023 presidential election. He maintained that critics have placed excessive emphasis on academic qualifications instead of evaluating leaders by their records in public office.
