According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, July 31, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, on Friday called on President Bola Tinubu to resign rather than wait to seek another term in the 2027 general elections.
He made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he spoke about the Abuja Federal High Court judgment that had earlier ordered the deregistration of the ADC before it was later overturned on appeal.
He said the legal development had stirred fresh political debate and should not be ignored and urged stakeholders to treat the issue with restraint.
Okonkwo said the development should not distract attention from the larger political issue surrounding Tinubu’s continued stay in office and his plans ahead of the next general election.
He maintained that public office should be handled with caution and clarity at a time of uncertainty, he said voters would watch how the matter evolves.
According to him, the President should not wait for the election season to begin before taking a decision on his political future, insisting that a peaceful exit would be better than allowing the process to drag on.
He said such a step would remove needless pressure from the political space, he said his position was meant as political warning.
He added that the matter should be seen in the context of political responsibility and the need for leadership to act in a way that avoids unnecessary tension as the country moves closer to 2027.
He also stressed that leaders ought to place national stability above personal ambition, he argued that calm leadership remains important in 2027.
The ADC chieftain maintained that the controversy around the court ruling was only one part of the wider political discussion, while the central issue remained the President’s future and the direction of governance in the country.
He said the discussion would continue to shape political conversations in the weeks ahead. He spoke as ADC watched developments around the ruling.
