According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Senator Rufai Sani Hanga has criticised former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over allegations that concerns about his age and health were used to prevent him from contesting for political positions.

Hanga, a former close associate of Kwankwaso and prominent figure within the Kwankwasiyya political movement, expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations reportedly given for denying him opportunities to seek elective office. He described the reasons as unfair and suggested that they were influenced by political considerations rather than his ability to serve.

The former senator claimed that his age and physical condition had been cited on several occasions to exclude him from political contests. According to him, this affected opportunities to contest for deputy governor and return to the Senate. He maintained that neither age nor a physical challenge should automatically disqualify a person from seeking public office when the individual remains capable of performing the required responsibilities.

Hanga also dismissed concerns surrounding his health, insisting that he remains physically capable of carrying out political and legislative duties. He explained that a problem affecting his leg had never prevented him from effectively performing his responsibilities as a lawmaker or contributing to public service.

He further questioned the argument surrounding his age, pointing out that he is younger than Kwankwaso. Hanga argued that politicians should be assessed based on their competence, capacity and ability to deliver rather than simply on how old they are.

He noted that several political leaders continue to occupy important positions despite being advanced in age, provided they possess the physical and mental capacity necessary to discharge their duties effectively.

Challenging Kwankwaso directly over the issue, Hanga said, “As of today, I’m healthier than Kwankwaso. “If he is talking about my age, how old was he when he became governor, and how old is he now as a vice-presidential candidate?”

Hanga’s remarks underline his rejection of the reasons allegedly used to limit his political ambitions and his belief that his experience and physical condition remain sufficient for public service.
